A key livelihood project in Huadu District - Guangzhou Longteng Foods Livestock Slaughterhouse Project was recently completed and put into operation, marking entry of the hog slaughtering industry of the District into a new stage featuring intensification, standardization and branding.

Guangzhou Longteng Foods Co., Ltd's livestock slaughterhouse project is located in Xibian Village, Chini Town, Huadu District, covering an area of about 16.5 acres, with a total investment of more than 650 million yuan. It started construction in April 2022, passed the joint inspection and acceptance upon completion organized by the housing and urban-rural development authority in April this year, and was formally put into operation in August after obtaining the qualification as a designated hog slaughterhouse.

The Slaughterhouse project is designed to slaughter 4,197,500 live pigs, 73,000 live cattle and 1,022,000 live sheep every year. As a modernized meat supply and distribution center integrating the slaughtering of pigs, cattle and sheep, and the processing, cold storage and distribution of meat, the project has on its shoulder the heavy responsibility of ensuring the stable production and supply of meat to maintain the "meat basket" of urban and rural residents in Guangzhou, Foshan and Qingyuan and even the Greater Bay Area. It is worth mentioning that the high-tech slaughtering workshop for cattle and sheep has effectively filled an industrial gap in the District.

In accordance with the management measures of Guangzhou related to hog slaughtering, the project will build hog slaughtering workshop, splitting workshop, cold storage, temporary storage room for innocent treatment, vehicle decontamination center, sewage treatment station, animal inspection building and other ancillary facilities. With its 6 pig slaughtering production lines, the project is expected to slaughter 4,197,500 pigs every year, in another word 11,500 pigs will be slaughtered every day for meat provision on the market, accounting for half of the daily supply of hogs of Guangzhou city.

In addition to a dual laboratory system covering both pre- and post-slaughter, constituting double insurance for food safety control, the project also is equipped with a sewage treatment station with a daily treatment capacity of 6,000 tons and a centralized treatment system for waste gas, which help build a clean and harmonious production environment, and effectively address the public concern about pollutions arising from slaughtering.

Pig slaughtering industry is a basic industry that has close relationship with people's daily life, connecting to pig farmers' “money bag “at one end and the people's “food basket “at another. Built with scientific planning and high construction standard, the hog slaughterhouse project is an important initiative of the District Party Committee and the District Government in practicing the people-centered philosophy of development to guaranteeing the people's “safety on the tongue”. After its operation, the project will provide 500 jobs, achieve an annual output value of 300 million yuan, pay tax of up to 15 million yuan a year, and have an expected annual turnover of over 300 million yuan. It will significantly improve the meat supply guarantee and food safety level of the whole District and even the whole city, promote the transformation and upgrading of animal husbandry, and boost the high-quality development of the District's agricultural industry and the comprehensive revitalization of the countryside.

Huadu District has witnessed rapid development of animal husbandry industry in recent years; a bunch of key agricultural projects, including Yuexiu Husbandry's pig farming project, Ketai Pigeon Industry's breeding pigeon farming project, Yihai Chenke's layer farming project, have been newly introduced to help revitalize the rural industry. In 2024, a total of 297,200 hogs were slaughtered, a year-on-year increase of 134%, making the District rank first in Guangzhou city; and the accumulated number of poultry slaughtered was 8,046,000, a year-on-year increase of 24.13%. The District is home to 5 national-level pig production capacity control bases, 5 provincial standardized demonstration farms, 1 provincial animal disease purification station, 1 modernized beautiful ranch, and 5 farms that meet the provincial requirements on reduction of veterinary antimicrobial use; and Huadu District was awarded the title of “District with Outstanding Performance in the National Action of Reducing Veterinary Antimicrobial Use” by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2023.

“Food is the most important thing to the people, and nothing comes before safety when food is concerned.” After the commissioning of this designated pig slaughterhouse, the District Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau will station official veterinarians, assistant inspectors and assistant supervisors there to carry out all-round supervision of the pig slaughtering process, and ensure good implementation of quarantine for pig slaughter and prevention and control of major animal diseases. Efforts will be made to further build the District's line of defense for pork product safety, ensure stable market supply, and inject new momentum for enhancement of food safety in the District.
